Fabrics
Here at Carey Costuming we offer several choices of fabric for your costumes, each with its own merits and disadvantages. Thus, we thought you might appreciate a description of each and its qualities. All of our fabrics are of at least medium weight and durable, in order to stand up the rigors of regular use.

Polyester/cotton blend

This durable fabric is a medium weight and has a more polished look to it. It is smoothly woven, resists wrinkling, and has a certain stiffness to it that gives it more body than drape. It maintains its body when washed, and can be machine washed with similar colors and tumbled dry. Shrinkage is minimal.

Raw silk noile

This period fabric is a medium weight and has a homespun, slightly nubby look to the weave. It is soft, breathes well, and gets more comfortable with each washing. It drapes beautifully, with minimal wrinkling. It can be machine washed with similar colors and tumbled dry, and should be expected to shrink a few inches over the length of the item.

Polyester/cotton Twill

This midweight fabric is useful for outerwear, and has a more polished look to it. It is smoothly woven, resists wrinkling, and has a certain stiffness to it that gives it more body than drape. It maintains its body when washed, and can be machine washed with similar colors and tumbled dry. Shrinkage is minimal.

Cotton

Our 100% cotton fabric is a medium weight and has a homespun look to it. It is soft, breathes well, and gets more comfortable with each washing. It drapes well but is prone to wrinkling. It can be machine washed with similar colors and tumbled dry, and should be expected to shrink a few inches over the length of the item.

Monk’s cloth

This heavy weight 100% cotton fabric has a very large weave for a homespun look. Because it shrinks immensely in the first washing, we pre-wash the fabric so you will end up with a product that is the size you ordered. This fabric drapes well, gets large creases rather than small wrinkles, and is warm and very soft. It does tend to get pulls when running through brush and other abrasive situations because of its wide weave. It can be machine washed with similar colors and tumbled dry.

Fleece

This very soft, 100% man-made fabric is fuzzy and warm. It does not wrinkle or shrink in washing, and as all of our fleece is from Malden Mills, who produce Polar Fleece, Wind Pro and Power Shield, it will not pill or lose its loft. Regular fleece is excellent for warmth and comfort, but it does have the disadvantage of absorbing water when caught in a steady rain. The Wind Pro is soft and fuzzy on both sides and does an excellent job of repelling water. The Power Shield is soft and fuzzy on one side and finished on the other, and water rolls right off of it. All of the above can be machine- washed and line dried.

Wool

We use 100% wool, of a mid-weight thickness. Wool has body and is soft, it resists wrinkling, and is warm. It drapes well, is good for outerwear, and can be treated with a fabric treatment like ScotchGuard to make it more water repellent. Certain items like the Raven and the Hood with Quarter Cloak can be machine-washed and line dried: this will shrink the item substantially and make it thicker and fuzzier. Most items, however, should not be washed, as they may distort and leave you very unhappy. Generally we strongly suggest brushing the mud off the item at regular intervals and dry-cleaning it occasionally.
