Garment Construction

Although all of us at Carey Costuming are enamored with the medieval life, we have come to accept that there are several benefits to the modern era. Most important to us are the serger, the sewing machine, and the embroidery machine.  (Not to mention the Internet!)

  • All of the clothing created by Carey Costuming has edges and seams that are finished with a serger. The serger is a machine that cuts and sews at the same time, and wraps the edges of the seam with thread so that it cannot unravel or fray. This finish is regularly applied in the industry to sweatshirts and athletic clothing. It creates a double row of stitching parallel to the edge of the fabric, as well as the wrapping effect, so the seams are much less likely to rip out. None of this is visible on the outside of the item, but strengthens the inside.
  • Along with the serged edges, many of the seams are topstitched with a regular sewing machine.  This means that the serged edge is folded to one side and stitched down again. This makes the seam very strong, and also insures that it lies flat without the need of ironing. This technique can be seen on denim jeans and casual clothing.

Carey Costuming provides clothing for the medieval enthusiast bound for Rennaissance Faires and social outings, but also has clothing tailored to the specific needs of two medieval groups: the Society for Creative Anachronism, and Live Action Roleplayers. Please read below, and refer to the linked pages for more information on these groups.

Carey Costuming offers washable wool items as an option for those who wear their clothing regularly, particularly LARPers and members of the SCA.  Several wool items that we make can be washed: the Raven, the Semicircle Cloak, the Full Cloak (unlined), and several of our various hoods.  We suggest that you wash them in cold or lukewarm water and line dry it so that they will not shrink excessively. Wash it by itself, or it will pick up lint from other items while being washed.   Please be aware that washed wool has a different look and feel than unwashed wool. Washing wool will cause it to shrink, as well as lose its shiny surface and become much softer and thicker. We suggest only washing the item as often as necessary- it will "pill" over time.

All of our wool items are now made with 100% wool and are available with 100% cotton lining as an alternative to polyester.  In this line of clothing we give our customers authenticity tempered with common sense.
